Barzani Warns Against Attacks on Kurdistan Region, Calls for Restraint and Peace

Masoud Barzani issued a public message on Sunday warning against continued attacks on the Kurdistan Region and urging Iraqi authorities to take serious action to prevent further escalation.

In his statement, Barzani emphasized that the people of Kurdistan have historically sought peace and coexistence rather than conflict. However, he said the region would defend itself and its rights if war were imposed upon it.

He described the current wave of conflicts and tensions in the region as deeply regrettable, stressing that disputes should always be resolved through peaceful means because wars bring only destruction and suffering.

Barzani also strongly criticized certain armed groups that, under the name of “resistance,” have launched attacks on civilian areas and economic infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region, as well as on positions of the Peshmerga Forces. He said such actions amount to a direct attempt to ignite conflict and undermine the stability and security of the region.

“The Peshmerga have never submitted to injustice or aggression from any side,” Barzani said, warning that patience and restraint have limits and that continued provocations aimed at destabilizing the Kurdistan Region cannot be tolerated.

He called on the Government of Iraq, the Council of Representatives of Iraq, and Iraqi political forces—particularly the Coordination Framework—to take a serious stance and put an end to the attacks, cautioning that continued incitement toward confrontation could have severe consequences.

Barzani concluded by expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent attacks and reassured the people of the Kurdistan Region that efforts would continue to keep the region away from war, safeguard its security and stability, and protect the lives of its citizens.

He expressed confidence that the people of Kurdistan would ultimately prevail.
