President Nechirvan Barzani, Sudani Discuss Regional Escalation, Reject Attacks on Iraqi Cities

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, discussed the latest regional developments on Friday in a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, as tensions continue to rise following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran.

According to a statement from the Iraqi prime minister’s media office, both leaders strongly rejected recent attacks targeting several Iraqi cities, including locations within the Kurdistan Region.

“They affirmed their rejection of the attacks targeting several Iraqi cities, including those in the Kurdistan Region,” the statement said, adding that both sides stressed Iraqi territory “must not be used as a launching pad for attacks against neighboring countries.”

Barzani and Sudani also voiced support for measures aimed at strengthening regional security and stability.

“Both sides emphasized the need to confront current challenges by unifying the positions and rhetoric of national forces to preserve the country’s stability and sovereignty, and to enhance national security,” the statement added.

The call comes amid heightened regional tensions following a large-scale aerial campaign launched by the United States and Israel against Iran last week. The strikes reportedly killed several senior Iranian leaders and military commanders, including the country’s long-time spiritual leader Ali Khamenei in the initial wave of attacks.

In response, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. military bases and civilian infrastructure across several countries in the Middle East, including areas in the Kurdistan Region, as well as in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Some regional countries, including Turkey, have so far not been directly targeted.

Meanwhile, drone attacks carried out by Iran-affiliated armed groups against U.S. bases in the Kurdistan Region have intensified over the past 24 hours, despite tightened security measures by Iraqi forces. The strikes have hit multiple provinces, resulting in casualties and material damage.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has reiterated that it will not side with any party in the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, emphasizing that it will not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries.

At the same time, several positions and bases belonging to Iran-backed militia groups operating inside Iraq have reportedly come under drone attacks in recent days, further complicating the already volatile security situation in the region.
