Iraq Assures Six-Month Food and Medical Supply as Regional Tensions Escalate

Iraq possesses sufficient food and medical supplies to meet domestic needs for more than six months despite rising regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, according to the Federation of Iraqi Industries.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Federation Chairman Adel Akkab said that Iraq’s domestic markets remain largely stable. He noted that more than 80 percent of the local market has not been affected by the escalating regional situation.

Akkab added that key industrial sectors—including fuel, gas, cement, and iron—continue to operate normally and remain well supplied. In some cases, he said, Iraq even has the capacity to export surplus quantities from these sectors.

The assurances come amid heightened tensions following joint US–Israeli strikes inside Iran on February 28, which triggered a wave of retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran targeting Israel and several US military bases across the region.

In a further escalation, Iran announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz to international maritime traffic. The strategic waterway carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making it one of the most critical energy routes globally.

The closure has already begun to affect regional energy markets and could disrupt parts of Iraq’s oil sector, which relies heavily on stable export routes and regional logistics.

Despite these developments, Iraqi industry officials maintain that domestic supply chains remain secure for the foreseeable future, emphasizing that the country’s strategic reserves and industrial production capacity are sufficient to prevent immediate shortages.
