Trump Signals Possible Nuclear Talks After Khamenei’s Death Amid Escalating Conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran’s leadership has indicated a willingness to negotiate following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, suggesting potential new discussions that could include Tehran’s nuclear program.

In comments to The Atlantic, Trump said talks with Iranian officials are expected, though he did not specify whether discussions would focus on military de-escalation, nuclear restrictions, or broader diplomatic issues. The White House has not released further details.

The diplomatic signal comes amid intensifying hostilities. The U.S. military confirmed that three American troops were killed in action during clashes involving Iranian forces. Officials did not provide additional operational specifics.

At the same time, the Israel Defense Forces said it carried out a series of “extensive” strikes in central Tehran on Sunday. Israeli authorities stated that Iran’s chief of army staff and defense minister were killed in the strikes. Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed those claims.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran has the “legitimate duty and right” to respond to Khamenei’s killing, without detailing the form such a response might take.
