President Nechirvan Barzani Holds Key Meetings with German Officials and Syrian Kurdish Leader at Munich Security Conference
During the third day of the Munich Security Conference, President Nechirvan Barzani held a series of high-level meetings with German officials and Syrian Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi, focusing on bilateral relations, regional stability, and security challenges.
President Nechirvan Barzani met with Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, where discussions centered on strengthening economic ties between Germany and Iraq, as well as the Kurdistan Region. Both sides explored opportunities to expand German investment across multiple sectors, particularly energy and economic development.
President Barzani expressed his appreciation for Germany’s continued support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the Region’s strong interest in benefiting from German expertise and experience in energy and economic fields.
On the sidelines of the conference, President Barzani also met with Mazloum Abdi to discuss the latest political and security developments in Syria and the broader region. The President underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and mutual understanding to achieve a comprehensive political solution in Syria—one that guarantees the rights of Kurds and all other communities within a unified Syrian state and its future constitution.
Mazloum Abdi conveyed his gratitude to President Masoud Barzani and the Kurdistan Region Presidency for their ongoing efforts to promote stability and for their significant role in facilitating a ceasefire agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The two leaders also addressed concerns over the potential resurgence of ISIS and the continued threat of terrorism in the region.
In a separate meeting, President Barzani met with Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. Their discussions focused on Germany’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, highlighting Berlin’s active and constructive role in the region.
President Barzani thanked Germany for its broad support and assistance to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors. Minister Wadephul acknowledged the Kurdistan Region’s role as a stabilizing force and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in Iraq and the wider region.
