Syrian Forces Take Control of Shaddadi Base After US Redeployment

Syria’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday that its forces had taken full control of the Shaddadi military base near the border of Hasaka province, following what it described as joint coordination with the United States, in a move that signals evolving security arrangements in the region.

In an official statement, the ministry said units of the Syrian Arab Army had assumed control of the base and its surrounding areas after U.S. troops redeployed from positions inside Syria.

The announcement comes days after American forces withdrew from the al-Tanf area in southern Syria and relocated to the Tower 22 base inside Jordan, a facility located only a few kilometers from al-Tanf. Syrian authorities said the redeployment was carried out in coordination with both Syrian forces and the Jordanian government.

According to the statement, Syrian troops have also expanded their presence along the country’s borders with Jordan and Iraq, particularly in the al-Tanf desert region, consolidating control over areas previously used by U.S.-led coalition forces.

The al-Tanf garrison was established by the United States in 2016 at the strategic tri-border junction between Syria, Iraq and Jordan. Its stated mission was to combat militants from the Islamic State and to counter hostile foreign military influence in the region.

Although Islamic State lost its last territorial stronghold in Syria in 2019, the group continues to operate as an insurgent network. As a result, foreign military deployments in Syria’s border regions have remained a sensitive and politically charged issue for Damascus and neighboring states.

The Shaddadi base, like al-Tanf, occupies a strategically important location along supply routes linking Syria and Iraq. Its transfer to Syrian government control marks a potential shift in on-the-ground authority in both southern and northeastern parts of the country.
