U.S. Envoy Calls Syria–SDF Agreement a Historic Turning Point

The U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, on Friday described a comprehensive agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a “historic and powerful turning point” toward national reconciliation, unity, and long-term stability in Syria.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Barrack said the agreement was the result of careful negotiations and reflects a shared commitment to respecting all components of Syrian society and protecting their dignity. He added that the deal signals the Syrian government’s seriousness about pursuing genuine partnership and inclusive governance.

According to Barrack, the agreement предусматриes the gradual integration of military, security, and administrative structures into unified state institutions. It also allows senior SDF representatives to participate in governing the country at high levels, a move he said would help consolidate state sovereignty across all Syrian territory and send a message of openness and justice to the international community.

Addressing Kurdish rights and their role in combating extremism, the U.S. envoy highlighted Presidential Decree No. 13, describing it as a transformative step toward equality and the correction of long-standing injustices. The decree provides for the restoration of Syrian citizenship to Kurds previously stripped of it, the recognition of Kurdish as a national language alongside Arabic, and the authorization and protection of Kurdish-language education in relevant areas.

Barrack said these measures reinforce the position of Kurds as an integral part of Syria’s national fabric.

He concluded by praising the courage shown by both parties, stating that the developments could help rebuild trust, attract investment needed for reconstruction, and lay the groundwork for lasting peace. Barrack expressed optimism that Syria is now prepared to regain its role as a source of stability and hope in the region.
