Iran Fast-Tracks Trials as Economic Protests Spread Nationwide

Protests triggered by worsening economic conditions have spread across Iran, marking the country’s largest wave of unrest in three years, according to state media and official statements.

Iran’s judiciary announced it will fast-track trials for those detained during the demonstrations. Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said special judicial chambers would be established and staffed by “experienced judges” to handle the cases swiftly and comprehensively.

“In order to deal swiftly, accurately and comprehensively with the cases of the rioters, there will be no leniency for whoever helps the enemy against the Islamic Republic and the calm of the people,” Ejei was quoted as saying by state media. He accused Israel and the United States of inciting the protests.

Authorities say more than 2,000 people have been detained in the first 10 days of unrest, which began in Tehran in late December before rapidly spreading to other parts of the country.

The demonstrations erupted following a sharp decline in the value of Iran’s national currency against major foreign currencies, fueling public anger over inflation, rising living costs, and economic instability.
