Kurdistan Democratic Party Intensifies Baghdad Talks to Secure Kurdish Interests in New Iraqi Government

A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) concluded a series of intensive meetings in Baghdad on Thursday, engaging with major Shia and Sunni political forces to negotiate the formation of Iraq’s new federal government and assert Kurdish constitutional entitlements.

The delegation, led by Fazil Mirani, head of the executive body of the KDP’s Political Bureau, has held at least 15 meetings over two days with key Iraqi leaders. The talks are part of ongoing negotiations following the October 11 parliamentary elections, as political blocs work to form the largest parliamentary coalition and distribute sovereign positions.

A central objective for the KDP is to secure what it terms the "Kurdish share" in the upcoming government, which includes resolving the issue of the Iraqi presidency—a position traditionally held by a Kurdish figure—and determining the party’s own political entitlements as the leading force in the Kurdistan Region and a major national player.

“The KDP is pushing for balance, partnership and consensus,” the party stated, emphasizing that the Baghdad discussions are critical for addressing the constitutional rights and share of the Kurdistan Region in the future government.

The delegation’s schedule remains full, with several Iraqi political figures set to meet with them at the Barzani Headquarters in Baghdad on Thursday. A key meeting is scheduled with Faiq Zidan, head of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, to stress the importance of convening the first session of the new parliament on its constitutionally mandated date of December 29.

The KDP’s negotiating team includes senior figures such as Fuad Hussein and Nawzad Hadi of the Political Bureau, Omed Sabah of the Central Committee, and Fars Issa, head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representation in Baghdad.

During their visit, which began on December 22, the delegates met with a wide spectrum of leaders, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Ammar al-Hakim, Muthanna al-Samarrai, Hadi al-Amiri, and Haider al-Abadi.
