KRG Orders Immediate Reconstruction of Flood-Damaged Schools in Chamchamal
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has directed the immediate reconstruction of schools damaged by severe flooding in the Chamchamal district, following a visit and assessment by the Region’s Minister of Education on Thursday.
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani issued the order for swift action to repair the nearly 40 schools impacted by recent floods. Minister of Education Dr. Alan Hama Saeed announced the directive during a press conference after touring the affected areas with a senior ministry delegation and the Director-General of Education in Sulaimani.
"Reconstruction of all affected schools will begin next week," Dr. Hama Saeed stated, confirming that engineering teams from the Sulaimani General Directorate of Education have already arrived to conduct full assessments. He added that necessary funds have been allocated to Sulaimani education authorities to expedite the process.
The minister outlined three key decisions under the prime minister’s directive:
Immediate funding and mobilization of engineering teams for school reconstruction.
Replacement of all educational materials and equipment destroyed by water and mud "as quickly as possible" to avoid disruption to academics.
Rescheduling of first-semester final exams for affected schools to January, allowing time for recovery and ensuring student stability before testing.
Dr. Hama Saeed praised teachers and school administrators for their "heroic and humanitarian" efforts during the flooding, noting their role in evacuating and protecting students. "They performed a great service, and as a government we express our deep appreciation," he said.
