Sunni Blocs Unite Under

In a significant move to consolidate Sunni political power, leaders of the major election-winning Sunni blocs announced the formation of a new coordinating body on Sunday. The "National Political Council" (NPC) was unveiled following a meeting hosted by Khamis al-Khanjar, head of the Sovereignty Alliance (Al-Siyada).

The newly formed council is described as an umbrella organization intended to unify the Sunni political landscape. Its founding members include the Taqaddum (Progress) Party led by Mohammed al-Halbousi, Al-Azm (Determination) Party, Al-Khanjar's Sovereignty Alliance, the Al-Hasm National Alliance, and the Al-Jamaheer Al-Wataniya Party.

According to a statement released after the meeting, the NPC aims to "coordinate positions and unify visions and decisions on major national issues." It further stated the council's goal is to "strengthen joint work among political leaders and blocs to serve the public interest and improve political performance." The statement confirmed that regular meetings will be held throughout the parliamentary term to ensure ongoing collaboration.

"The council will remain open to all national partners and committed to shared principles that preserve Iraq’s unity and stability while safeguarding the rights of all communities without exception," the statement added.

The formation of the NPC comes after the release of final election results by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC). According to the IHEC, Al-Khanjar's Sovereignty Alliance secured nine seats, placing it third in the Sunni political scene.

The Taqaddum Party, led by former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, emerged as the dominant Sunni force with 27 seats, followed by Muthanna al-Samarrai's Al-Azm Party with 15 seats. The new council effectively brings together the three largest Sunni-led blocs, representing a concerted effort to present a unified front in the upcoming government formation talks and the new parliamentary session.
