KRG Advances Environmental Protection and Sustainability Efforts
The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) ninth cabinet has prioritised environmental protection, forest preservation, and the reduction of climate pollution, implementing a series of concrete measures to achieve these objectives.
Non-compliant refineries and private diesel generators have been decommissioned, and by the end of next year, the Kurdistan Region is expected to have continuous 24-hour electricity generation with minimal emissions.
So far, 11.4 million square metres of land have been cleared of mines, natural gas provides 83% of the region’s electricity, and green coverage has expanded from 15% to 18%.
To safeguard forests, 34 million square metres of natural firebreaks have been created. Additionally, the region’s first asphalt recycling plant has begun operations to process and reuse used asphalt.
