ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – In a significant step toward technological advancement, Salahaddin University-Erbil has launched the region's first academic department dedicated entirely to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The initiative, established within the College of Information Technology and Informatics, aims to equip a new generation of students with the skills to lead in an increasingly AI-driven world.

The move responds to rapid global developments in AI and aligns with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) broader strategy to build a modern, knowledge-based economy. It also reflects Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s emphasis on digital transformation and empowering youth through innovation.

Saman Abdullah, Director of Media at Salahaddin University-Erbil, highlighted the department’s importance in a statement to Kurdistan24 on Sunday. He noted that the university leadership recognized the urgent need to prepare specialists in line with technological advancements worldwide.

"The university decided this year to open the Artificial Intelligence department within the College of Information Technology and Informatics," Abdullah said.

The program has already generated considerable interest, with admission rates for its inaugural class ranging between 85% and 94%. To ensure high-quality education, the university has appointed specialized professors and experts in AI to teach the curriculum.

The department’s establishment is part of a growing focus on technology and innovation in the Kurdistan Region. Earlier this year, events such as the 7th International Conference on Applied Science, Energy, and Environment (ICASEE 2025) and the Medico Health Exhibition highlighted AI’s potential in sectors like healthcare and public administration.

In May 2024, the first International Artificial Intelligence Conference in Erbil emphasized democratizing AI technology in the region, citing local talent and government support as key advantages.

Hiwa Afandi, Head of the KRG’s Department of Information and Technology, has been instrumental in promoting this digital transformation. He previously noted that Prime Minister Barzani’s vision included a clear roadmap for digitizing the government, with AI playing a central role.
