Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Inaugurates Strategic Qushtapa-Bistana Water Project

Barzani: Optimal use of water resources is our highest duty — protecting them from waste is a collective responsibility

Erbil, Kurdistan Region — In a major step toward strengthening service infrastructure and securing vital resources for citizens, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the strategic Qushtapa and Bistana Water Project, along with surrounding rural areas, during an official ceremony held on Thursday.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Barzani highlighted the vital importance of water as the source of life, stressing the need for its efficient and responsible management.

“The optimal use of water resources is our highest duty, and protecting them from waste is a collective responsibility,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that ongoing urban expansion and growing demand for water had made it essential to implement modern and wide-reaching water projects across Kurdistan’s cities, towns, and villages. These initiatives aim to provide comfort for citizens and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.

Barzani pointed out the significant decline in groundwater levels, emphasizing that such projects are critical for guaranteeing access to drinking water, supporting agriculture, and improving living standards. He commended the executing company, Awzan, for completing the project in less than a year, and extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Municipalities, the governor, and all government teams for their joint efforts in realizing the project.

Addressing broader environmental concerns, the Prime Minister underscored that preserving water resources and protecting the environment are shared responsibilities. He warned that the effects of drought and reduced rainfall are being felt across Iraq and the region, calling for serious and coordinated actions to reduce the impact of global climate change. Barzani also revealed that the KRG is working with international partners to confront these challenges.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister announced plans to launch a new package of public service projects, many of which are already completed or underway. Among them is the recently approved Dukan–Sulaymaniyah Grand Water Project, which will play a key role in addressing the water crisis in Sulaymaniyah Governorate. He expressed optimism that these projects will ensure no area in Kurdistan faces water scarcity.

Barzani further called upon educational institutions, religious figures, and intellectuals to help foster a culture of water conservation and environmental awareness, urging all citizens to make sustainability a core social value.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment, the Prime Minister stated that the Kurdistan Regional Government will continue serving the people and expanding services across sectors such as electricity, roads, digital transformation, health, and education.

“The wealth of our nation belongs to all the people of Kurdistan,” Barzani concluded. “We must use it wisely to serve them. The government will remain a servant of the people and will proudly continue the path of service, construction, and prosperity for Kurdistan.”
