Iraqi Intelligence Chief Visits Damascus, Meets Syrian President to Bolster Security Ties
In a move underscoring the close bilateral relationship between the two neighbors, Iraqi Intelligence Chief Hamid Al-Shatri arrived in the Syrian capital on Thursday for high-level talks with President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The meeting, directed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, focused on critical regional issues, including border security, counterterrorism efforts, and the situation of the Iraqi community residing in Syria, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Both officials agreed to strengthen security cooperation between their nations, a step they described as essential for promoting stability and safety in the region. The talks highlight the ongoing strategic partnership between Baghdad and Damascus, which has persisted despite Syria's regional isolation following years of conflict.
The official Syrian news agency reported that Al-Shatri conveyed a written message from Prime Minister Al-Sudani to President al-Sharaa, which centered on "ways to enhance bilateral relations and develop cooperation in various fields to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples," and addressed common challenges.
Prior to his meeting with the Syrian president, Al-Shatri visited the Iraqi Embassy in Damascus, where he met with the acting Iraqi chargé d’affaires.
This visit marks Al-Shatri’s third trip to Damascus since al-Sharaa assumed power. His first visit in December 2023 was met with controversy after photographs showed him being received officially while carrying a sidearm. His second visit occurred in April, when he delivered an invitation for President al-Sharaa to attend the Arab Summit in Baghdad. While the Syrian president did not attend the summit, he later held a private meeting with Prime Minister Al-Sudani in Qatar.
