White House Launches Official TikTok Account Despite Ongoing Ban Threat
The White House has officially launched a TikTok account, even as the China-based video-sharing platform continues to face a potential ban in the United States over national security concerns.
The account went live on Tuesday with a 27-second clip featuring former President Donald Trump declaring, “I am your voice.” The post, captioned “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” quickly drew attention, attracting nearly 19,000 followers within just a few hours. By comparison, Trump’s personal TikTok account boasts over 110 million followers.
TikTok’s operations in the U.S. remain uncertain. The Trump administration has repeatedly extended the deadline for the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to secure a non-Chinese buyer. The latest extension is set to expire in mid-September.
During his first term, Trump attempted to ban TikTok outright, citing fears that U.S. user data could be accessed by Beijing. However, he has since softened his stance, crediting the platform with helping him gain support among younger voters during his successful bid to return to the White House.
“The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
She added, “President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we’re excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before.”
Despite the White House’s embrace of the platform, concerns remain on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers continue to warn that TikTok could pose a risk to U.S. national security unless its ownership structure changes.
