Erbil’s Historic Choli Minaret Set for Major Renovation to Preserve Cultural Legacy

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a landmark move to protect one of the city’s most iconic historical landmarks, authorities in Erbil have announced a comprehensive restoration project for the famed Choli Minaret, a towering symbol of the region’s rich heritage. The initiative aims to safeguard the ancient structure while boosting its appeal as a key tourist attraction in the heart of Kurdistan’s capital.

Also known historically as the Muzzafferiya Minaret, the Choli Minaret dates back to the reign of Sultan Muzaffar al-Din Kokburi (1190–1232 AD), a period marked by significant architectural and cultural advancements. Standing at 37 meters tall, the cylindrical minaret is believed to be the last remnant of a grand mosque from that era. Its name, "Choli" (meaning "desolate" in Kurdish), reflects its long history of standing isolated before Erbil’s urban expansion surrounded it.

Located southwest of the Erbil Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the minaret is renowned for its unique double-door design and twin internal staircases—a rare architectural feat that highlights the ingenuity of its builders.

Nadir Babakr, Director General of Antiquities and Heritage of Erbil, confirmed to Kurdistan24 that a specialized Czech team has already completed an in-depth study of the minaret’s condition. The same experts previously worked on its restoration 17 years ago, ensuring continuity in preservation efforts.

The renovation will include:

Repairing cracks to prevent weather-related erosion.
Replacing the perimeter fence for enhanced security.
Installing surveillance cameras to deter vandalism.

Additional aesthetic and structural improvements to ensure long-term stability.
Babakr reassured the public that the minaret is not at risk of collapsing, noting that its slight lean—a distinctive feature—has remained unchanged since the last restoration.

The Choli Minaret is a cornerstone of Erbil’s cultural identity, drawing visitors fascinated by the city’s blend of ancient history and modernity. Tourists have long advocated for its preservation, and the new project aligns with broader plans to develop the surrounding area into a protected heritage zone.

Proposals under consideration include:

Reducing vehicle traffic near the site to minimize vibrations and pollution.
Creating a dedicated tourism space with landscaped gardens, informational displays, and visitor amenities.
