Kurdistan Regional Government Boosts Food Security and Agricultural Productivity

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has made significant strides in ensuring food security and enhancing agricultural development, marking a major step toward economic stability.

As part of its food security initiative, the government has constructed three new grain silos, with several more underway. Once completed, these facilities will have a combined storage capacity of 200,000 tons of wheat, safeguarding the region’s food supply.

Agricultural productivity has seen a dramatic rise, jumping from 1.8% to 10%. To support farmers and improve crop preservation, the KRG has established 30,000 plastic greenhouses and 319 cold storage units, ensuring that agricultural products remain fresh for longer periods.

In a historic move, the ninth cabinet facilitated the first official export of locally produced agricultural goods to international markets, opening new economic opportunities for the region. Additionally, over 11,000 new companies have been registered, and 1,650 factories have been established, further diversifying the economy.

“Strengthening local production and expanding economic infrastructure remain top priorities for the KRG,” a government spokesperson stated. “These measures not only ensure food security but also create jobs and boost sustainable growth.”
