Iraq Hands Over Remains of 20 Victims from 2014 Badush Prison Massacre to Families

Iraq’s Ministry of Health on Saturday handed over the remains of 20 victims of the 2014 Badush Prison massacre to their families after completing DNA identification procedures.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed that this is the fourth batch of recovered remains, bringing the total number of identified victims to 171. The remains were transported to the victims’ home provinces—including Baghdad, Najaf, Babil, Karbala, Dhi Qar, Salah al-Din, and Basra—with logistical support from authorities.

“Preparations are underway for additional deliveries soon to close the Badush file and ensure justice for the families,” the ministry said.

The massacre took place in June 2014 after ISIS militants seized control of Mosul and the nearby Badush Prison. More than 670 inmates, predominantly Shia Muslims, were executed in a sectarian killing after being separated by their religious affiliation.

The identification process has been ongoing for years as Iraq continues to uncover mass graves left by ISIS atrocities. The handover of remains provides some closure to grieving families while underscoring the lasting scars of the militant group’s brutal reign.
