Erbil Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Refineries, Arrest Dozens in Environmental Push
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a major enforcement operation, Erbil officials have shut down dozens of illegal refineries and arrested multiple individuals for violating environmental and safety regulations.
Governor Umed Khoshnaw announced that 43 suspects have been detained under court orders, with 85 illegal refineries dismantled across Erbil province. The crackdown targets makeshift oil processing facilities that have long contributed to pollution and public health hazards.
"In the Qushtapa border district alone, we've dismantled six refineries, permanently closed one, and brought 15 others into compliance after temporary shutdowns," Khoshnaw stated. The facilities now operating must adhere to strict guidelines set by the Erbil Environmental Committee.
Authorities have referred two refinery owners to court, with one already in custody as investigations continue. The campaign follows a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) mandate ordering the immediate closure of any unlicensed refinery, with violators facing legal consequences.
