Iraq Warns of Global Fallout as Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates, UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting

Iraq’s envoy to the United Nations issued a stark warning on Monday over the rapidly deteriorating regional stability amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, cautioning that attacks on nuclear facilities risk triggering a wider war with catastrophic global consequences.

Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Iraq’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Abbas Kazem, condemned recent airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites, calling them a dangerous violation of international non-proliferation norms.

“Targeting nuclear infrastructure sets a troubling precedent,” Kazem said, warning that further military escalation could draw in more regional and international actors. He urged immediate diplomatic intervention to prevent radioactive contamination and humanitarian disasters.

“These attacks threaten civilians, the environment, and neighboring states,” he stressed, noting that radioactive fallout could cross borders, endangering populations far beyond the immediate conflict zone.

Kazem revealed that Iraq has already suffered multiple violations of its sovereignty amid the hostilities, underscoring the conflict’s expanding reach. He emphasized that the Middle East, after decades of instability, now faces the specter of a full-scale regional war with severe economic repercussions, including disruptions to global supply chains and maritime trade.

The Security Council meeting was convened to address the U.S.-led strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. A draft resolution submitted by Russia, China, and Pakistan demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Reiterating Iraq’s stance, Kazem called for de-escalation as an urgent global priority, warning that failure to act could lead to irreversible consequences. “The international community must act now to restore dialogue and prevent further catastrophe,” he said.
