Iraq Condemns US-Israeli Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites, Warns of Regional Escalation

The Iraqi federal government on Sunday strongly condemned the recent US and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that the escalating military campaign threatens both regional and global stability.

The condemnation follows a series of high-intensity attacks that have significantly expanded the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. According to multiple reports, US B-2 bombers carried out precision strikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites using bunker-busting munitions, destroying critical uranium enrichment infrastructure.

These strikes mark the first direct US military intervention in the conflict, which began on June 13 when Israel launched "Operation Rising Lion," targeting Iran’s Arak heavy-water reactor, centrifuge production facilities, and nuclear research centers.

In an official statement, Iraqi government spokesperson Basim Alawadi expressed "deep concern and strong condemnation" over the attacks, calling them a "grave threat to peace and security in the Middle East."

"The Iraqi government rejects the use of force in resolving international disputes and emphasizes the need to respect state sovereignty and protect civilian infrastructure," the statement read.

Alawadi urged an immediate de-escalation, stating, "Military action can never replace dialogue and diplomacy. Wars leave only destruction in their wake… Iraq calls for urgent diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis."

Iran has denounced the US and Israeli strikes as a "blatant violation of international law." The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed heightened nuclear security risks at the targeted sites but reported no radiological leaks so far.

Regional powers, including Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, have also called for restraint, warning that further escalation could trigger a broader humanitarian crisis. The United Nations has echoed these concerns, urging all parties to seek a diplomatic resolution.

Despite international appeals, diplomatic efforts have made little progress. Talks between European officials and Iranian negotiators in Geneva have stalled, while US President Donald Trump has demanded Iran’s "unconditional surrender," vowing not to back down until achieving a "real end, not a ceasefire."

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that continued aggression would cause "irreparable damage," accusing the US and Israel of pushing the region toward an uncontrollable war.

As tensions escalate, Iraq—which maintains ties with both Iran and the US—faces increasing pressure. Iran-aligned armed factions, including groups within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), have threatened retaliation against US forces in Iraq if the conflict widens.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has previously condemned Israeli airstrikes as violations of international law, warning that the region risks being "pulled into a catastrophic war with no clear end."
