Kurdistan Region Launches Nationwide Campaign Against "Frightening" Rise in Drug Abuse
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed has warned that the surge in narcotics use poses a "frightening" threat comparable to terrorism, as officials launched a comprehensive campaign to combat drug abuse and trafficking.
The initiative, titled “Together Toward a Strong and Healthy Society,” was inaugurated under the supervision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and organized by the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF). During the opening ceremony, Ahmed emphasized that drug trafficking and addiction have escalated into a critical national security concern.
“This is a historical challenge faced globally, but its threat to national security today is no less severe than terrorism,” Ahmed stated. “Our fight is not only against terrorists—it is also a war against the devastation caused by drugs.”
The campaign aims to raise public awareness, strengthen law enforcement efforts, and provide support for addiction treatment. Authorities have yet to disclose specific measures but stressed the need for collective action to curb the growing crisis.
The Kurdistan Region has seen an increase in drug-related arrests in recent years, with officials linking the trend to broader regional trafficking networks. The new initiative signals a heightened governmental response to what is now being treated as a top-priority security issue.
