Kurdistan PM Barzani Reaffirms Strong U.S. Partnership in Washington Visit

Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to the United States during high-level meetings in Washington this week, emphasizing Kurdistan’s role as a key ally in security and energy cooperation.

In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Barzani expressed gratitude for U.S. support, particularly in the fight against ISIS. "We wanted to come to Washington to thank the President, the government, the armed forces, and the American people for their continuous support," he said. "We are proud to be U.S. allies, friends, and partners—not just in defeating terrorism, but in building a prosperous future together."

Barzani’s visit came as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced major energy agreements with U.S. companies worth over $100 billion, covering vast natural gas and oil reserves. However, the Iraqi federal government has rejected the deals as unconstitutional.

"Our constitution clearly defines Kurdistan’s rights," Barzani countered. "We have the authority to develop our energy sector, and these companies have been operating in our region for 15 years."

Asked about the U.S. decision to lift sanctions on Syria, Barzani cautiously supported the move but warned of lingering dangers. "We agree with giving Syria a chance," he said, "but ISIS remnants remain a threat. They must be contained and eliminated through cooperation."

Regarding Iran’s nuclear talks and its regional influence, Barzani struck a diplomatic tone. "We hope for a peaceful resolution," he said. "We support the vision of economic development and stability, not war."

When questioned about past U.S. policy shifts that left Kurdish forces vulnerable, Barzani defended the relationship. "The U.S. was instrumental in defeating ISIS," he said. "On this trip, we heard strong support from the administration. We trust this partnership will continue."

Barzani’s remarks underscored Kurdistan’s strategic importance to Washington—both as a security ally and an emerging energy hub. "We stand with America," he declared. "That will not change."
