UNESCO Pledges Support for Iraq's Climate Change Efforts, Highlights Media's Role
UNESCO has reaffirmed its readiness to support Iraq in mitigating the effects of climate change and global warming, emphasizing the critical role of media in raising awareness and driving action.
During his participation in the Fourth Arab Media Conference in Baghdad, UNESCO's representative in Iraq, Tab Raj Bint, stated that the international community stands prepared to back Iraq's efforts to combat climate challenges. He called for "strengthening support for environmental media and activating commitments under international climate agreements."
Bint underscored the media's pivotal role in addressing climate change, noting that UNESCO launched the "Journalism for the Planet" initiative last year as part of its programs in Iraq. The initiative focuses on leveraging journalism to enhance environmental awareness and spotlight climate risks facing Iraq, which is classified among the countries most affected by geographical and climatic changes.
The initiative, introduced on World Press Freedom Day 2024, was the first to promote the concept of "climate justice," highlighting the need for equitable solutions in the fight against climate change.
UNESCO's commitment aligns with broader international efforts to support Iraq as it confronts escalating environmental challenges, including droughts, rising temperatures, and water scarcity.
