Iraq Opens Registration for Parliamentary Elections; Sets November 11 as Polling Date

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced the commencement of the registration process for political coalitions, parties, and individual candidates ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Emad Jamil, head of IHEC’s media team, confirmed on Thursday that candidate registration will begin on May 25 and remain open until June 24. During this period, political alliances, parties, and independent candidates can submit their electoral lists for the polls.

Jamil also provided an update on biometric voter registration, revealing that 1.2 million eligible voters have already updated their biometric details. With approximately 30 million Iraqis eligible to vote, IHEC is intensifying efforts to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The announcement follows the Iraqi Council of Ministers’ decision on April 9, 2025, which unanimously approved November 11, 2025, as the date for the next parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s office confirmed the timeline, emphasizing the government’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process.

IHEC spokesperson Jumana Ghalai reiterated that the commission is fully prepared to conduct the elections as scheduled. To facilitate voter participation, Iraq has established 1,079 registration centers nationwide. These centers will assist unregistered voters in submitting biometric data and allow others to update or correct their existing records.

The upcoming elections mark a critical step in Iraq’s democratic process, with authorities working to ensure broad participation and technical readiness for a credible vote.
