Barzani Calls for Unity, Warns of New Threats at Kurdistan Democratic Students and Youth Union Congress

Erbil, kurdistan Region – The Unity Congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Students and Youth Union was officially launched today in Erbil with the attendance of President Masoud Barzani and Deputy KDP Leader Masrour Barzani. The event marked the formal unification of two major youth organizations affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

In a keynote speech, President Barzani hailed the unity of the student and youth unions as a historic and strategic step forward, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping the future of the Kurdistan Region. “I am confident that from now on, you can serve the people and the nation even better and more effectively,” Barzani said.

He praised the historical contributions of Kurdish youth in past struggles, including the September and Gulan revolutions and the fight against ISIS, urging them to remain vigilant in what he described as a “new and dangerous war”—a battle against drug addiction, loss of identity, and hopelessness among youth.

Barzani warned that this modern conflict is more threatening than past military confrontations, stressing that youth must actively combat these dangers through education and national awareness. He called narcotics a "war tactic" and described those suffering from addiction as victims, but labeled drug traffickers as criminals who must be fought with determination.

Addressing gender inclusion, Barzani expressed joy over the increasing presence of women in youth organizations and encouraged continued growth in their participation within party ranks.

Turning to political issues, Barzani criticized the federal government in Baghdad for undermining the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights, particularly in matters of budget and salaries. He stated that the ongoing economic pressure on the Region is a betrayal of Kurdish sacrifices and called for a return to the principles of partnership, balance, and consensus as outlined in the 2005 Iraqi constitution.

“If Baghdad no longer believes in federalism, they must say so openly,” he said. “But the current treatment of the Kurdistan Region is unconstitutional and unjust.”

Barzani also discussed internal politics, urging swift government formation within the Kurdistan Region based on unity and shared governance. He insisted on forming a single parliament, a unified Peshmerga force, and a cohesive administration, stating that any government lacking these foundations would be unsustainable.

He expressed cautious optimism regarding the ongoing peace process in Turkey and voiced support for Kurdish unity efforts in Syria. Barzani reiterated the importance of resolving regional tensions through diplomacy, trade, and cooperation rather than conflict.

Concluding his speech, President Barzani pledged continued support for the youth union and emphasized their responsibility in safeguarding Kurdish identity and advancing the nation's cause.
