Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Receives New Indian Ambassador, Discusses Strengthening Ties

Erbil, Kurdistan Region — Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Masrour Barzani, received the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Iraq, Sumeet Bagchi, on Wednesday in Erbil to discuss bolstering bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and India.

The meeting, also attended by the Indian Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, Madan Gopal, focused on enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors. Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Ambassador Bagchi on his new post and expressed the full support of the KRG. He emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the Kurdistan Region and India, especially in areas of mutual interest.

Prime Minister Barzani also extended his gratitude to Consul General Gopal for his dedicated service and contributions, as his tenure comes to an end.

Ambassador Bagchi praised the rapid urban and economic development in the Kurdistan Region and reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening relations. He highlighted potential collaboration in information technology, digital transformation in public services, and support for KRG’s ongoing banking sector reforms.

The Ambassador also revealed efforts to establish direct flights between Erbil and Indian cities, which would further facilitate economic, cultural, and diplomatic exchanges.
