Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Inaugurates Erbil Middle East Tourism Exhibition (METEX)
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), officially opened the third edition of the Erbil Middle East Tourism Exhibition (METEX), highlighting the event as a key step in advancing the region’s tourism sector.
The exhibition, held with broad participation from local and international tourism companies, was attended by diplomats, consular representatives, and foreign business delegates. In his opening speech, Barzani emphasized the government’s commitment to boosting tourism as part of its strategy to diversify the economy and create job opportunities.
Barzani stressed that revitalizing tourism—both public and private—is a top priority for the KRG. “The combined efforts of the government and private sector will drive this vital industry toward greater progress and prosperity,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted past government initiatives aimed at developing tourism infrastructure and promoting Kurdistan’s unique attractions. He called for enhanced services to encourage more visitors, both domestic and international, to explore the region’s cultural, historical, and natural treasures.
Barzani highlighted Kurdistan’s distinct advantages, including its ancient history, cultural diversity, and stunning landscapes. “It is time to present the world with Kurdistan’s true image—one of coexistence, heritage, and natural beauty,” he said.
He outlined the government’s three-pillar strategy for tourism development:
Promoting Geographic Diversity – Highlighting each area’s unique natural and scenic attractions.
Preserving Historical Sites – Including the UNESCO-listed Erbil Citadel and other archaeological treasures.
Upgrading Tourism Services – Modernizing hotels, restaurants, and facilities to meet international standards.
The Prime Minister announced a series of government-led tourism projects, expected to encourage private sector investment. He emphasized that development must reach all parts of the region to ensure inclusive growth.
Barzani also underscored tourism’s role in job creation, particularly for youth, and its potential to strengthen the private sector. “Attracting more tourists will boost our economy and showcase Kurdistan’s potential to the world,” he said.
In his closing remarks, Barzani thanked exhibitors and participants, expressing hope for a successful event. “We welcome all visitors to experience Kurdistan’s hospitality and look forward to a future of sustained growth and prosperity,” he said.
