Kurdistan Regional Government Council of Ministers to Discuss Oil Exports and Pension Reform

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers is set to hold a key meeting today, chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani. The session will focus on two major agenda items: the latest developments in negotiations over the Region’s oil exports and a proposed restructuring of the public pension system.

The first item on the agenda will address recent developments in talks between the KRG, the Iraqi federal government, and international oil companies regarding the resumption of Kurdistan’s oil exports. The discussions will take place within the framework of Iraq’s Federal Financial Budget Law, which has been a point of contention between Erbil and Baghdad. The KRG is expected to review the outcomes of recent negotiations and assess next steps to ensure the Region’s oil revenues are managed in accordance with federal agreements.

The second major topic involves a proposed draft decision to reorganize the General Retirement Management Institution in the Kurdistan Region. This reform aims to align the pension system with Iraq’s Unified Retirement Law No. (9) of 2014 and recent rulings by the Federal Court. The changes seek to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the public pension framework, ensuring better benefits for retirees while addressing legal and financial challenges.

Today’s meeting underscores the KRG’s efforts to resolve longstanding disputes with Baghdad over oil revenue sharing while advancing domestic administrative reforms. Further updates are expected following the conclusion of the session.
