First International Scientific Conference on Yazidis Kicks Off in Kurdistan

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Under the patronage of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the first-ever International Scientific Conference on the Yazidi Component commenced today at the University of Duhok. The two-day event, jointly organized by the University of Duhok and the Lalish Cultural and Social Center, brings together scholars, researchers, and experts to explore the religion, heritage, history, and geography of the Yazidi community.

The conference serves as a major academic platform to discuss the Yazidi faith, cultural traditions, and historical identity. Dozens of research papers will be presented, covering topics such as Yazidi theology, ancient rituals, and the community’s historical presence in the region.

Researchers and academics from 11 countries are participating in the event, highlighting its international significance. The conference aims to foster a deeper understanding of Yazidi culture and address challenges facing the community, particularly in the wake of persecution by extremist groups in recent years.

"This conference marks a historic step in recognizing and preserving Yazidi heritage," said a representative from the Lalish Cultural Center. "By bringing together global experts, we hope to shed light on the rich history and resilience of the Yazidi people."

The proceedings will continue until April 30, 2025, at the University of Duhok’s Conference Center, with discussions expected to contribute to broader academic and cultural preservation efforts.

The Yazidi community, an ancient religious minority, has faced severe persecution, particularly during the ISIS onslaught in 2014. This conference not only highlights their cultural significance but also reinforces efforts to document and protect their legacy for future generations.
