President Nechirvan Barzani Welcomes Italian Ambassador, Discusses Strengthening Ties with Italy and Basra
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – President Nechirvan Barzani met with Mr. Niccolò Fontana, the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, in Erbil to discuss enhancing bilateral relations between Italy, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region. The talks centered on expanding cooperation in key areas such as the economy, culture, education, and cultural heritage preservation.
President Barzani expressed gratitude for Italy’s role in the international coalition against ISIS and its ongoing support for the Peshmerga forces and regional development projects. He emphasized the importance of deepening partnership with Italy across multiple sectors.
Ambassador Fontana reiterated Italy’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Kurdistan Region, praising its stability and progress. He affirmed Italy’s readiness to boost collaboration with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
In a separate meeting, President Barzani also hosted Basra Governor Mr. Asad al-Idani to explore ways to enhance cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Basra province. Both leaders stressed the need for improved coordination among Iraqi provinces to foster mutual development.
Governor al-Idani commended the Kurdistan Region’s advancements and expressed Basra’s interest in benefiting from the Region’s expertise in administration, strategic planning, and public service delivery.
The discussions underscored the Kurdistan Region’s proactive engagement in strengthening both international and domestic partnerships for long-term stability and growth.
