President Nechirvan Barzani Commemorates the 51st Anniversary of Qaladze Bombing, Honors Martyrs of the University of Sulaimani
President Nechirvan Barzani today issued a solemn statement marking the 51st anniversary of the bombing of the University of Sulaimani and the city of Qaladze, a tragic event that occurred on April 24, 1974. The bombing, carried out by the former Iraqi regime, resulted in the deaths of dozens of students, teachers, and civilians and remains one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Kurdish struggle.
In his message, President Barzani paid tribute to the victims, describing them as "heroic martyrs" whose sacrifice continues to inspire the people of Kurdistan. "We bow our heads in respect before their pure souls," he said, emphasizing that the brutal attack, aimed at crushing the Kurdish liberation movement, instead fortified the people's will and deepened their resolve for freedom.
President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to the people of the Pshder and Qaladze regions, recognizing them as enduring symbols of resistance and national pride. “It is our collective responsibility to build a better future for these communities and for all of Kurdistan,” he stated.
The anniversary of the Qaladze bombing serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of Kurdish dignity and independence. The president concluded his statement with a heartfelt tribute: “Salute to the pure souls of the martyrs of the University of Sulaimani, Qaladze, and all the martyrs of Kurdistan. May their memory be blessed.”
