President Nechirvan Barzani Celebrates 127th Anniversary of Kurdistan Newspaper and 27th Anniversary of Kurdistan Union of Journalists
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – On the occasion of the 127th anniversary of Kurdistan newspaper—the first Kurdish newspaper founded by Mir Miqdad Medhet Bedirkhan—and the 27th anniversary of the Kurdistan Union of Journalists, President Nechirvan Barzani extended his heartfelt congratulations to all journalists and media professionals in the Kurdistan Region.
In his message, President Barzani emphasized the vital role of press freedom and free expression as fundamental pillars of democracy, societal progress, and a thriving community. He reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for journalists, ensuring unimpeded access to information, and addressing any violations of journalism laws.
"Free, courageous, responsible, and critical journalism is essential in building a more just and progressive Kurdistan," President Barzani stated. He urged media professionals to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and integrity while avoiding sensationalism and harmful discourse. He also called on journalists to promote multiculturalism, coexistence, and tolerance in their work.
The President paid tribute to the martyrs of Kurdish journalism and all those who sacrificed in the pursuit of truth and public service. He also acknowledged the efforts of local and international organizations monitoring freedom of expression in the Kurdistan Region, pledging to utilize their insights to further strengthen the media sector.
