President Nechirvan Barzani Mourns the Passing of Pope Francis, Honors His Legacy of Peace
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, remembering him as a man of "great humility, compassion, and moral courage."
In a heartfelt statement, President Barzani reflected on the late Pontiff’s enduring legacy as a "beacon of hope, peace, and human dignity" for people around the world. He also recalled with deep gratitude Pope Francis’s historic visit to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in 2021, describing it as a "profound act of faith and solidarity" that left an indelible mark on the people of Kurdistan.
"His Holiness’s prayers for peace in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world will always be cherished," President Barzani said, adding that the Pope’s courageous outreach to conflict-affected communities strengthened interfaith harmony and global solidarity.
President Barzani concluded his tribute by extending condolences to the Vatican and Catholics worldwide, saying, "May his divine soul rest in eternal peace."
Pope Francis, the first Pope to visit Iraq, made a historic trip to the country in March 2021, including stops in Erbil, Mosul, and Ur, where he called for unity and reconciliation among Iraq’s diverse communities. His visit was widely celebrated as a symbol of hope and resilience for the region.
