Kurdistan Region and Central Bank of Iraq Strengthen Ties on Financial Reforms and Digital Transformation
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), Ali Mohsen Al-Alaq, on Wednesday to discuss advancing financial reforms and accelerating digital transformation initiatives in the region.
The high-level talks focused on Iraq’s national digital finance strategy, including the progress of the "My Account" (Hesabî in Arabic, Hezhmari Min in Kurdish) initiative and the broader push to digitize government services. Both leaders stressed the need to reduce reliance on cash transactions and enhance secure digital payment systems to improve transparency and economic efficiency.
Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed his government’s commitment to expanding digital payment solutions across the Kurdistan Region, highlighting their importance in fostering long-term economic growth. He also thanked the CBI for its ongoing support of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) financial reforms, particularly in modernizing public finance management and strengthening the banking sector.
Barzani commended Governor Al-Alaq’s efforts to reform Iraq’s banking system, calling them crucial for rebuilding public trust and attracting investment. He reiterated the KRG’s readiness to collaborate with institutions operating under the CBI’s legal framework to ensure cohesive and effective implementation of reforms.
The meeting underscores deepening cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad on financial modernization, signaling a shared vision for a more digitized and transparent economy in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
