PM Barzani Honors Anfal Victims, Calls for Federal Compensation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – On the 37th anniversary of the Anfal campaigns, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani issued a statement paying tribute to the victims of the genocide committed by Saddam Hussein’s regime and urging the Iraqi federal government to fulfill its obligations toward survivors and victims' families.

In his statement, Barzani honored the tens of thousands of innocent Kurds who were forcibly disappeared and executed in mass graves during the late 1980s. "The Anfal campaigns were a horrific crime against the people and land of Kurdistan, the consequences of which are still felt today," he said.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the Iraqi federal government has a "legal, constitutional, and moral duty" to provide both material and moral compensation to the families of the victims, as well as to others who suffered under the former Ba’ath regime.

The KRG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the families of the Anfal victims and all martyrs of Kurdistan, pledging continued assistance in various forms.

Barzani concluded his message by stating, "Peace be upon the pure souls of the martyrs of Kurdistan. Their memory, and the memory of the Anfal victims, will remain eternal in our conscience."

The Anfal campaigns, recognized as genocide by several international bodies, resulted in the deaths of an estimated 50,000 to 180,000 Kurds. Survivors and advocacy groups continue to demand justice, reparations, and official recognition from Baghdad.
