President Barzani Inaugurates 17th Erbil International Book Fair, Stresses Unity and Progress
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani officially opened the 17th edition of the Erbil International Book Fair on Tuesday, praising the event as a cornerstone of cultural development in the Kurdistan Region.
In his keynote address, President Barzani welcomed attendees and commended the organizers, including Dar Al-Mada and the Al-Mada Foundation’s Director-General, Fakhri Karim, for their efforts in making the exhibition a success. "This fair has become an annual tradition we take pride in," he said, emphasizing the enduring value of books despite technological advancements. Quoting the famed poet Al-Mutanabbi, he remarked, "The best companion in time is a book."
Kurdistan’s Commitment to Democracy and Coexistence
Barzani highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s dedication to democratic principles, citing the successful October 2024 elections, which were conducted transparently under international observation. "Many doubted these elections would happen or feared major disputes, but they proceeded smoothly, allowing all parties to secure their rightful seats," he said. He urged the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to expedite government formation, stressing that unity is vital amid regional instability.
Calls for Political Cooperation
The President emphasized the opposition’s role in guiding governance and called for a "new chapter" in political collaboration. "The KDP and PUK have made progress, but they must finalize government formation quickly," he stated, warning of escalating global crises that require a united Kurdish front.
Erbil-Baghdad Relations: Progress and Challenges
On Iraq’s political landscape, Barzani acknowledged partial resolutions in Erbil-Baghdad disputes but cautioned that long-term solutions depend on adhering to Iraq’s constitution. "The 2005 constitution, supported by 85% of Iraqis, was built on partnership, balance, and consensus. Ignoring it has caused many of today’s problems," he said.
Regional Stability and Iraq’s Role
Barzani warned against Iraq’s entanglement in regional conflicts, urging Baghdad to act prudently. "With wars raging nearby, Iraqi leaders must ensure stability and avoid further crises," he said, expressing hope for an end to conflicts in Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond.
The book fair, held in cooperation with the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Culture and Youth, runs until April 15, featuring exhibitors from across the globe. President Barzani’s speech underscored the event’s role in fostering knowledge and dialogue amid challenging times.
