Dana Gas Boosts Production at Kurdistan’s Khor Mor Field to New High

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – UAE-based Dana Gas announced Thursday a significant increase in natural gas production at the Khor Mor field in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, achieving a new record output of 525 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d).

The company confirmed in a statement that the elevated production level has been maintained since early March 2024, marking a 75% rise compared to 2017 levels. Alongside natural gas, the field is producing 15,200 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate (a light crude oil) and 1,070 tonnes per day of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Strategic Importance of Khor Mor

Located in Sulaymaniyah province, the Khor Mor field is one of Iraq’s largest gas reservoirs and a critical component of the Kurdistan Region’s energy infrastructure. Operated by the Pearl Petroleum consortium—led by Dana Gas and its affiliate Crescent Petroleum—the field supplies fuel to local power plants, which generate most of the region’s electricity.

The increased gas output has reduced reliance on costlier and more polluting liquid fuels, ensuring more stable and affordable electricity for millions. However, the facility has faced security challenges, including sporadic rocket attacks, underscoring the volatile operating environment.

Plans for Further Expansion

Dana Gas reaffirmed its commitment to expanding production further through the "Khor Mor 250" (KM250) project, aiming to boost capacity by an additional 50% by early 2026. The company highlighted that a recent $1 billion investment accelerated development, enabling rapid progress in recent months.

The milestone underscores Khor Mor’s growing role as a key energy hub for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, with significant potential for future growth. The expansion aligns with efforts to enhance energy security and economic stability in the region.
