ISIS-Linked Attacker Wounds Two in Duhok Market Stabbing During Holiday Celebrations

Duhok, Kurdistan Region – A suspected Islamic State (ISIS) supporter carried out a stabbing attack in Duhok’s central market on Tuesday, injuring two civilians during public celebrations for Ramadan and the Akitu festival, authorities confirmed.

Attack During Holiday Festivities

The assailant, identified as a Syrian national with alleged extremist ties, attacked bystanders with an axe before being swiftly subdued by local security forces. The Kurdistan Region Security Council stated that the suspect’s ideology aligned with ISIS, though his exact affiliation remains under investigation.

The two wounded civilians received medical treatment, and no fatalities were reported. Authorities praised the rapid response of Duhok’s Asayish (security forces), who arrested the attacker at the scene.

Rare Attack in Stable Region

Duhok, a typically secure province in the Kurdistan Region, hosts a large population of displaced Syrians and refugees. The attack—occurring during dual holiday celebrations—rattled residents but was quickly contained. Security officials assured the public that threats were under control while urging continued vigilance.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigations into the assailant’s motives and potential connections are ongoing, with findings to be released later. The incident highlights lingering security risks despite ISIS’s territorial defeat in 2017.

Kurdish authorities reiterated their commitment to counterterrorism efforts and cooperation with civilians to prevent future attacks.
