Paris to Honor Peshmerga with Dedicated Street and Park in Historic Gesture

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a landmark move strengthening ties between the Kurdistan Region and France, Paris will dedicate a street and park to honor the Peshmerga forces, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw announced on Thursday.

The decision, described as a symbolic recognition of the Peshmerga’s sacrifices and their role in regional stability, follows years of French support for the Kurdish cause. Governor Khoshnaw, in an exclusive interview with Kurdistan 24, confirmed that preparations for the dedications are complete.

“Naming a street and park in Paris after the Peshmerga is a powerful tribute to their bravery and the values they defend,” Khoshnaw stated.

Deepening Kurdish-French Ties

The initiative highlights growing diplomatic and cultural cooperation between Erbil and Paris. In a related development, Khoshnaw revealed plans to establish a "Paris House" at the historic Erbil Citadel, part of a joint cultural project with Paris officials. One of the Citadel’s heritage homes will be renovated to serve as a symbol of strengthened ties between the two cities.

The agreement was finalized during Khoshnaw’s recent meeting with the Mayor of Paris, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to heritage preservation and bilateral friendship.

Paris to Host Newroz Celebrations

Further solidifying the relationship, the Paris municipality has officially voted to host this year’s Newroz celebration at its headquarters. The event, scheduled for tonight, will showcase Kurdish culture and is expected to be attended by French officials and diplomats.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) representative in France welcomed the developments, stating that such gestures reflect international recognition of Kurdish contributions to peace and security.

“From Cologne to Paris, Newroz celebrations demonstrate that Kurds are not only preserving their identity but also emerging as a force for stability and partnership in Europe,” the representative said.

A New Chapter in Kurdish-French Relations

These initiatives mark a significant step in Kurdish-French cooperation, celebrating shared values, cultural exchange, and mutual respect. Both cities are now working to honor a common history while building a collaborative future.
