Iraq to Host 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad on May 17
In a major diplomatic milestone, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced on Thursday that the 34th Arab League Summit will be held in Baghdad on May 17. The event marks a significant step in Iraq’s efforts to bolster its regional and international standing, as the country prepares to welcome leaders and senior officials from the 22-member organization.
The summit, which serves as a key platform for addressing political, economic, and security challenges in the Arab world, will be the first hosted by Iraq in over a decade. Foreign Minister Hussein met with top officials to review logistical, organizational, and technical preparations for the high-profile gathering. According to a statement from Iraq’s foreign ministry, discussions focused on ceremonial protocols, security arrangements, and media coordination to ensure the event’s success.
The Iraqi federal government has pledged to create all necessary conditions for a smooth and impactful summit, aiming to showcase a positive image of the country while fostering Arab unity and cooperation.
In mid-February, Hussein chaired a high-level meeting with Iraq’s foreign and interior ministers, where participants emphasized that the summit would prioritize enhancing economic cooperation and promoting regional security and stability. These themes are expected to dominate discussions in Baghdad.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani first announced Baghdad’s hosting of the summit in 2025, describing it as a pivotal moment in Iraq’s reintegration into the Arab world. The event underscores Iraq’s growing role as a regional mediator, following its successful facilitation of talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Those efforts culminated in a China-brokered agreement in March 2023, which restored diplomatic ties between the two regional powers after a seven-year rift.
Beyond the Middle East, Iraq has also expressed its willingness to mediate in other conflicts, including the war in Yemen—described by the United Nations as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises—and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The upcoming Arab League Summit in Baghdad represents a significant diplomatic opportunity for Iraq, highlighting its commitment to regional stability and leadership. As preparations intensify, the event is poised to reinforce Iraq’s position as a key player in addressing the challenges facing the Arab world and beyond.
