Iraq Announces Major Milestone in Resuming Oil Exports from Kurdistan Region
In a significant development for Iraq’s oil industry, Bassem Mohammed, Deputy for Extraction Affairs at the Iraqi Oil Ministry, announced on Sunday that the country is set to resume oil exports from the Kurdistan Region. The first phase of this initiative will see Iraq receiving 185,000 barrels of oil per day, exported through Turkey’s Ceyhan port. This volume is expected to increase gradually, with plans to reach 400,000 barrels per day in the near future.
The resumption of oil exports marks a critical step in revitalizing Iraq’s energy sector, which faced setbacks due to the suspension of Kurdistan Region oil exports in recent years. Mohammed acknowledged the challenges caused by the hiatus, stating, "It will take time to reach previous production levels," but emphasized that efforts are underway to restore output.
Currently, the Kurdistan Region has the capacity to produce 300,000 barrels of oil per day. Of this, 185,000 barrels will be allocated for export, while the remaining 115,000 barrels will be used for domestic consumption.
The announcement also highlights improving relations between Erbil and Baghdad. A delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) recently visited Baghdad to discuss the formation of a joint committee tasked with monitoring the oil export process. Mohammed praised the KRG’s readiness to resume exports, calling it a positive step toward strengthening collaboration.
To ensure the safe and efficient resumption of oil exports, technical teams from the North Oil Company and KRG representatives have been inspecting the pipelines leading to Ceyhan port. Their focus is on assessing the condition of the pipelines and evaluating pressure levels within the network. Mohammed also revealed that discussions have been held with Turkish officials to confirm the readiness of the pipelines for exports. "We are awaiting a response within the next 24 hours," he said.
This development underscores Iraq’s commitment to revitalizing its energy sector and fostering stronger ties with both the Kurdistan Region and Turkey. The Iraqi Oil Ministry views the resumption of oil exports through Ceyhan as a key component of its broader strategy to enhance bilateral relations and ensure sustainable energy operations.
As Iraq moves forward with this initiative, the ministry remains engaged with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth and efficient export process, marking a new chapter in the country’s oil industry and regional cooperation.
