Iraq Prepares for Record Influx of 13 Million Iranian Pilgrims

The Iraqi Ministry of Culture's Tourism Board is anticipating an unprecedented influx of Iranian pilgrims this year, with numbers expected to reach 13 million, more than double Iran's forecast of 4.6 million. The surge reflects a significant increase in religious tourism to Iraq and highlights the extensive preparations underway to accommodate the massive flow of visitors.

Mahdi Ghazban Saadi, Director of the Tourism Groups Department at the Ministry of Culture, outlined the comprehensive measures in place to manage the influx. "Five land ports, including Zarbatia and Shalamcha, have been fully prepared to receive pilgrims from Iran," Saadi stated. "We are expecting the number of pilgrims to reach 13 million."

Beyond the arrangements at the land ports, the Shaib gate is ready to welcome pilgrims from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other nationalities, making it one of the busiest entry points. The Safwan gate has been designated for pilgrims from the Gulf countries, while the Munziriyah gate in Mandali is prepared for visitors from Turkey and Azerbaijan.

"Over 40 cabinets have been set up for stamping passports, along with the provision of drinking water and bridges," Saadi added, emphasizing the readiness of Baghdad and Najaf airports to handle the expected surge in flights carrying pilgrims to Iraq.

Last year, nearly six million foreign pilgrims visited Iraq, with four million coming from Iran. The anticipated number of Iranian pilgrims this year marks a substantial increase, reflecting Iraq's growing role as a destination for religious tourism. The scale of preparations underscores Iraq's commitment to accommodating this large number of visitors, despite the logistical challenges posed by such a massive influx.

As Iraq braces for this historic pilgrimage season, the Ministry of Culture remains focused on ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for all visitors, highlighting the country's dedication to fostering religious and cultural tourism.
