Flash Floods Claim Lives of Hikers in Kurdistan's Qaradagh District

In a tragic incident in the Qaradagh district of Sulaimani province, four members of the Sagrma Mountaineering Organization lost their lives due to flash floods in the Masuran valley near Zard mountain. The incident occurred as a group of hikers encountered swift and unexpected floodwaters while exploring the area.

Sheikh Alan, a member of the Sagrma Mountaineering Organization, confirmed on Friday that the bodies of the four hikers had been discovered by rescue teams and subsequently sent for forensic examination. Aram Ali, spokesperson for the Sulaimani Civil Defense, also corroborated the discovery of the four bodies, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Reports indicate that the group of hikers consisted of twelve individuals, with unfortunately four succumbing to the flash flooding. Thankfully, the remaining members—totaling five—escaped unharmed and are reported to be in good health.

Governor Rauf Kamal of the Qaradagh district shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, stating that the group of hikers had ventured into the region from Sulaimani without prior notification to the relevant authorities. The governor noted that the hikers were caught off guard by a fierce rainstorm, leading to the disastrous outcome.

The devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with exploring natural environments during adverse weather conditions. Authorities continue to urge caution and emphasize the importance of adhering to safety protocols, including notifying local authorities before embarking on such ventures. The entire region mourns the loss of these adventurers and extends condolences to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
