Iranian Border Patrol Fires on and Assaults Kurdish Kolbers, Injuring Five
In a disturbing incident near the city of Kermanshah, Iranian border patrol forces opened fire and physically assaulted a group of Kurdish Kolbers, resulting in the injury of five individuals, according to a report by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
The identified Kolbers involved in the incident include Johar Moradi, Hamid Ahmadi, Idris Esmaili, and Yahya. A fifth Kolber, aged 60, sustained severe injuries from direct gunfire by Iranian forces. The identity of the elderly victim has not been confirmed as of the latest reports.
This incident follows a pattern of ongoing border shootings that highlight the perilous conditions faced by cross-border cargo carriers in economically struggling Iranian Kurdish cities. Just last week, Iranian guards at the border crossing reportedly inflicted severe injuries on four additional Kurdish Kolbers.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights revealed that in 2023, Iranian border guards were responsible for either killing or injuring a total of 333 Kurdish Kolbers. This alarming statistic signifies a troubling rise in Kolber casualties compared to the preceding year.
The targeted violence against Kurdish Kolbers raises concerns about the safety and security of individuals engaged in cross-border trade in the region. Local and international human rights groups are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging Iranian authorities to take immediate action to prevent further harm to the vulnerable Kolber community.
The Iranian government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and awaiting a response from Iranian authorities on this grave matter that affects the lives and well-being of Kurdish Kolbers.
