Terrorism Forces Confirm Killing of Leaders in Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Drone Strike in Baghdad
In a statement released today, the Counter-Terrorism Unit in the Kurdistan Region has confirmed the death of leaders within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) as a result of a drone strike on a PMF headquarters in central Baghdad.
According to the statement, "According to Iraqi local media, a headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the heart of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, was targeted by a drone strike, resulting in the killing of leaders in the Al-Nujaba Movement and the injury of six others."
The strike targeted the headquarters of the Al-Nujaba Movement, a faction within the Popular Mobilization Forces, in Baghdad.
Preliminary information indicates that "the airstrike targeted the headquarters of Brigade 12 of the Popular Mobilization Forces on Palestine Street in Baghdad," resulting in the death of PMF leaders.
According to Kurdistan24's correspondent, the logistic support headquarters of Brigade 12 of the Al-Nujaba Movement within the Popular Mobilization Forces, located near the Iraqi Police College in eastern Baghdad, was hit by an aerial bombardment from an unidentified drone. The attack resulted in two fatalities and six injuries among the Al-Nujaba Movement members, according to initial reports.
Kurdistan24's correspondent further pointed out that the deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces' operations in Baghdad, Abu Taqwa Al-Saeedi, and his assistant were reportedly killed, with six others injured in the airstrike.
This incident follows previous attacks on the Popular Mobilization Forces, including artillery shelling northwest of Kirkuk on December 3, 2023, and an airstrike in the town of Dubiz/Dibis, northwest of Kirkuk, targeting the Imam Ali Brigades, which resulted in casualties among their ranks.
It is worth noting that the United States executed two sets of strikes in Iraq on the night of Tuesday/Wednesday, November 22, 2023, against armed groups in response to a series of recent attacks on forces in the region. Reports suggest that at least five people were killed and others wounded in an American attack on a Popular Mobilization Forces unit in Kirkuk.
The situation remains fluid, and these developments mark an escalation in tensions in the region, prompting concerns about the potential for further violence and its impact on the stability of Iraq and the broader Middle East. International observers are closely monitoring the situation for further updates.
