Kurdish Associations and Unions Strongly Condemn Attacks on Kurdistan Region, Call for Federal Government Intervention

Various Kurdish associations and unions have strongly denounced what they describe as "unjust attacks" on the Kurdistan Region and the political pressures being exerted on the region. They place full responsibility for protecting the region on the federal government.

In a joint statement issued during a press conference on Wednesday, these associations and unions expressed their concern over escalating regional and international conflicts and the emergence of war and instability in the Middle East. Regrettably, they noted that enemies of the nation and the Kurdistan Region have targeted their lands through various political and financial means, including drone attacks on airports and headquarters of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

The associations and unions believe that the objective of these attacks is to "undermine the security and stability in the Kurdistan Region, and we condemn all attempts to do so." They urge the federal government to "prevent these attacks, take control of them, remove these armed militias from the Iraqi military scene, and conduct a serious investigation into these attacks."

Furthermore, they call on the international community, embassies, consulates, and coalition forces to "condemn these hostile attacks on the Kurdistan Region and support and assist the region in protecting itself from such attacks."

The statement concluded with the Kurdish unions and associations rejecting all attempts to undermine the existence of the Kurdistan Region. They call on the federal government to promptly resolve all outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, which have led to financial crises, emphasizing that resolving these issues would be a positive and effective response to the enemies of the nation.

In a related development, a Peshmerga base in the Salah al-Din district, northeast of Erbil, came under attack with two drones on the evening of December 30, 2023. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported.

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the terrorist attack on the Peshmerga base and called on the federal government to take practical and effective measures to deter these groups and hold them accountable. In a statement on his official account on the X platform, Barzani expressed deep concern about the "lawless attackers and those complicit with them," emphasizing the region's right to defend its people.

Barzani stressed that these attackers exploit state funds and weapons to target the Kurdistan Region, jeopardizing the country's overall stability and potentially reigniting bloodshed in a nation that has already experienced enough bloodshed. He urged the federal government to view any attack on the Kurdistan Region as an attack on the entire Iraq and to take appropriate action.

Barzani warned that continued negligence would encourage these criminals to persist in their crimes. The Kurdistan Regional Government urges the federal Prime Minister to take practical and effective measures to deter these groups, hold them accountable, and reaffirm the state's control over the lands used as launching pads for such attacks.
