Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Department Arrests Six Drug Traffickers in Erbil Amidst Intensified Crackdown on Illicit Trade

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a concerted effort to combat the escalating illicit drug trade, the Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Department executed a successful operation resulting in the arrest of six individuals involved in drug trafficking in the city of Erbil. The operation was conducted under the authority of a security judge-issued warrant and marks a significant step towards eradicating this nefarious trade from the region.

According to a statement released by the Anti-Narcotics Department on Thursday evening, the operation targeted a drug trafficking network operating in the vicinity of Ganjan City and the area opposite Harsham Two on Bahrka Road in Erbil. The arrested individuals are believed to be key players in this illegal trade.

The operation took a dramatic turn when one of the defendants resorted to violence, opening fire on the anti-drug forces. Subsequently, he attempted to take his own life, causing self-inflicted injuries. Quick response by the authorities resulted in the immediate transfer of the injured suspect to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The condition of the injured individual remains undisclosed at this time.

In a separate development, security forces stationed at the Haji Omaran Border Crossing, located in the province of Erbil, conducted a successful operation to seize a cache of illicit drugs. Additionally, they apprehended several individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and possession. This operation is part of the broader efforts to staunch the flow of illegal narcotics from neighboring Syria into Iraq, a trend that has seen an alarming surge in recent times.

The increase in illicit drug transportation across international borders has prompted security forces both in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to intensify their vigilance and undertake frequent anti-drug operations. These efforts are aimed at curbing the spread of this dangerous trade, which poses serious threats to public health and safety.

The Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Department, in collaboration with security forces, remains committed to combating drug trafficking and the associated criminal activities with unwavering determination. The recent arrests and seizures serve as a testament to their resolve to safeguard the well-being of the region's citizens and uphold the rule of law.
