UN Suspends Iran's Right to vote in the General Assembley
The New York Times reported yesterday that Iran's right to vote in the UN General Assembly has been suspended.
The report quoted António Guterres as saying in a letter to the President of the General Assembly that Iran and four other African countries had all breached the delinquency threshold under Article 19 of the U.N. Charter. The article states that any member owing the previous two years of assessments may not vote in the General Assembly.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran, on his part, expressed his anger on Twitter, describing the move as unreasonable.
"This decision is fundamentally flawed, completely unacceptable and completely unjustified," Zarif's letter stated.
However, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Islamic Republic would transfer the payment soon.
